Patrick Carlin Mohundro
pezzettino
Barely Fair, Chicago, IL
4.3.2026 - 4.19.2026

Patrick Carlin Mohundro, blue and orange, 2026, stained glass, 1 x 1 inch

Small panes of colored glass, conjoined with solder, are positioned in varying configurations that reference the formal constructions of modernist painting and sculpture. Within a miniature gallery booth at a miniature art fair, the works by Patrick Carlin Mohundro establish a self-contained material economy in which the forms of modernism are reworked as signs within a system that governs their exchange and institutional framing.

Entitled pezzettino, the series borrows its name from the 1975 children’s book by Leo Lionni. The word, meaning “little piece” in Italian, suggests a fragment in search of its own autonomy; a form defined not by its completeness but rather by its relation to a larger whole.

For Mohundro, the individual glass tiles relate themselves as fragments or pixels, shapes that imply a larger structure to which they might belong. Their modularity allows for the forms to oscillate between image and object, hovering between the legibility of a system and the autonomy of discrete parts. When aggregated in miniature and staged within a correspondingly scaled architectural context, these small forms assume the posture monuments, adopting their compositional language through their relation to preexisting forms. But as monuments, they are decisively unmonumental. Their scale resists grandeur, and in doing so, suggests that the mathematical sublime may reside just as powerfully within the smallest of forms.
